THE 69 EYES

BACK IN BLOOD
Prelistening

Helsinki, Apollo, 14.08.2009

Primal dubious related to The 69 Eyes' affection to the ground of Los Angeles and Grammy awarded producer Matt Hyde who replaced J.L. Michaels behind producing helm was soon, after European tour with splendors of Swedish dark scene Tiamat and bands departure into the studio in the City of Angels,  replaced by the curiosity and expectation. Because, news from the studio trickled but  in the same time intensity was sufficient to burn the impatience in everyone devoted to the work of at the moment, beside the movie vampires of Twilight saga, the most popular vampires in our part of the universe. And when the recording process of the album named «Back In Blood» reached its height with the first pre-listening party in New York, the old continent was patiently waiting for its first looks into the world of sharpen fangs of Helsinki Vampires and welcomed it first in Berlin and London and now finally into bands master cave – Helsinki.

Place and time of action: club Apollo, with its ambient the place like made to taste first drops of aromatic blood wrapped into the snazzy package named "Back In Blood", 14th August 2009.

The first snatch of “Back In Blood” saga in the nucleus starts with the album title song, energetic rock story with its atmosphere pretty much on the trace of the cult vampire move “Lost Boys” that already inspired The 69 Eyes on the album “Devils”. “Back In Blood” is one of those, as we usually say, tuned and there is no doubt lyrics: “wake me, take me, let me share this curse with you” will obtain the expecting effect in the audiences on concerts because… “blood is a new black!”

„We Own The Night“ adds to the first song «Back In Blood» not only with its atmospheric rock sound, because on this album Matt Hyde in the first place, beside exceptional Jyrki' vocals  put Bazie' and Timo' guitar skills, but also with vampiric lyrics which are from the first until the last song the leading line of this album. «We Own The Night» will with catchy refrains where Jyrki a little bit play with his expression be ranked high by everyone related to this band.

“Dead N’Gone” is the first of songs that brings us back to the sound we love the most when it is about this band, the one we usually call as a characteristic The 69 Eyes sound. Guitars, melancholy, lyrics that will occupy mind for days… everything is here.

„The Good, The Bad & The Undead“  is anthemic ode to rock'n'roll.  Wild, tuned, guitar riffs fraught and with excellent rhythm section is one of those that will, if its find the place on the  set list, cause the positive chaos between all those who have „sold (our) souls to rock'n'roll“.

„Kiss Me Undead“ with its sound and arrangement balance somewhere between „We Own The Night“ and „Dead N'Gone“, count Dracula and seducive bloody lips of ancient vampiresses. Yeah, „kiss me undead, wake me from the darkness“… 100% The 69 Eyes!

„Lips Of Blood“ is another in a chain of songs some expect to hear from The 69 Eyes – saturated by guitars, expressive Jyrki' performance, catchy refrains and productional faceted with a dose but in the same time until it reached maximum…. With no trouble you'd feel its bite on your neck and try to keep it there as long as possible.

„Dead Girls Are Easy“, sleazy representative on the album and the song that has seen its video premiere on Playboy.com caused the real dissraction between fans after the premiere because after cult „Blessed Be“ and melancholic „Paris Kills“ albums which casted as a definition of Gothic Rock on The 69 Eyes way this song with its heavy arrangement in Mötley Crüe style and with catchy refrain sounds a bit apocalyptic in its devotion to online girls with a looks to kill.

„Night Watch“  is a total slew in comparison with previous song and one of those that really are on a trace of mentioned album „Paris Kills“ – wistful, gentle, dark, seducive, with a refrain which engrave into memory….

„Some Kind Of Magick“ with its sound, performance and lyrics adds to a previous track. Another song written in recognizable The 69 Eyes style and with arrangement' wrap into a mainstream rock sound.

„Hunger“ inspired by the same titled incredible movie with great David Bowie is one of the strongest on the album. And again «Paris Kills» mind-flow. Unmistakable The 69 Eyes song in all its elements, especially when it comes to Jyrki' voice and leading guitars.

„Suspiria Snow White“ brings us back on the track of wild, but in the same time carefully dosed rock sound. Another song in a chain which proves how far are The 69 Eyes ready to go for a rock 'n' roll!

„Eternal“,  12th and in the same time the song which closes «Back In Blood» album. In a mind alternately Elvis, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Johnny Cash.... Awesome acoustic step lundge for remarkable looks into the sunset!

„Back In Blood“  is, there is no discussion about it, as Jyrki69 himself said, album for which The 69 Eyes waited for 20 years. Under direction of Matt Hyde brought to the producing highs it is one of those that will be often mentioned when it comes to this years best creation in dark/rock music. Because «Back In Blood» is in the same time classic rock album but also an album that will prowl under the skin to everyone who understands the essence of what is popularly called Gothic Rock. With a full responsibility I dare to say «Back In Blood» is in its plentitude and integrity the other cheek of Gothic Rock, and The 69 Eyes with this album definitely opens a new chapter in their long and rich career and takes the road that is meant to be only for their journey of music success where not even a sky is a limit anymore.

From Helsinki with blood on her fangs,
